Aspire to be a Chivalrous Shepard

The Messenger of Allah, may Allah exalt his mention and grant him safety, said (1):

Allah, The Most High, will not look at three types of people on the Day of Resurrection:

  1. Those who disobey parents.
  2. Women who imitate men in appearance.
  3. Men who condone inappropriate behavior for their wives

Shaykh al-Fawzaan commented (2) on characteristic number three by saying:

An unchivalrous man is he who condones inappropriate behavior for his wife. An example of this is standing by in silence, allowing unrelated men to be around her. A man is the shepherd of his home, and he is responsible for his flock.

It is impermissible for him to allow his wife to converse and joke with men. It is obligatory for him to prevent all causes that contribute to a lack of chivalry, such as allowing her to mingle with men, allowing her to cover improperly (3), and allowing her to travel without a guardian.
